Short summary

Magic — trading as GetMagic.com, and often searched as "Get Magic" — is a virtual assistant company founded in 2015, headquartered in San Francisco with operations in Manila. It began as an on-demand text-a-request concierge service and has since repositioned around dedicated virtual and executive assistants.

The review picture is genuinely mixed, and unusually so. Magic's Trustpilot score sits in the "average to good" band rather than the near-perfect range common in this category, and the most detailed independent review page we found gives it a far lower score off a very small sample. The company does, however, publicly respond to negative reviews — including with specific remedies — which is more than most competitors in this space do.

What satisfied customers of Get Magic said

The positive reviews cluster around a few consistent themes, drawn from Magic's Trustpilot profile.

Assistants who expand beyond their original brief. One reviewer described hiring a part-time sales development assistant who performed well enough sourcing LinkedIn leads that the client moved her to a broader role. Another described initially hiring an assistant for marketing work, then discovering he could handle considerably more.

Working independently with structured reporting. A reviewer said the candidates Magic proposed were well vetted and matched the brief, and that the assistants worked independently while reporting back regularly on progress. Another noted their assistant arrived at recurring meetings on time and prepared with notes and a work summary.

Consistency over time. One reviewer credited communication, clarity and consistency as the foundations of their experience and described Magic as pivotal to their company's growth.

What critical reviewers of Get Magic raised

Three themes recur. All are sourced to Trustpilot and Virtual Assistant Assistant, and represent the opinions of the individual reviewers.

1. Billing while work was not being delivered

This is the most frequently repeated complaint and the one a prospective buyer should ask about directly.

A reviewer named Rhonda reported two instances of being charged while her assistant was not working, and stated that as of May 2023 she had not received refunds for February and March of that year. Magic responded publicly, apologising, saying it would resolve the matter, and adding an edit explaining that refunds take 7–10 business days to process and are captured when bills run on Thursday evenings Pacific time.

A reviewer named Roger described a poor experience with an assistant combined with continued billing. Magic replied that he should certainly not keep being billed and directed him to a support address to resolve it.

On Virtual Assistant Assistant, a reviewer identified as Z (May 2022) said they were awaiting two refunds after being charged twice, and a reviewer identified as Betty R Long (September 2022) reported being charged after receiving no response to a first week of assignments.

2. Work quality and time-to-completion

A reviewer posting as QB said they asked an assistant to reformat a spreadsheet, that it took 25 hours, and that the result was unusable. Magic responded to this review.

Another reviewer summarised their experience as good onboarding but with the quality of work not following through.

3. Platform and oversight tooling

A reviewer named Jared reported a non-functioning client portal and an assistant he considered unskilled, with no way to track performance. Magic's public response is worth quoting in substance because it is unusually specific: the company said it had been mid-transition on the portal at that time, that the portal had since added complete time tracking and daily summaries of assistant work, that its screening process had become more rigorous, and it offered him a free month with a better-matched assistant.

4. The Virtual Assistant Assistant page

The three reviews on that page (May 2022, September 2022, January 2023) are all one-star, producing the 1/5 overall rating. Two describe billing and refund problems; one is a single-line allegation with no supporting detail.

Get Magic vs Wishup

Both companies sell dedicated virtual assistants to small businesses and founders, so this is a closer like-for-like comparison than most. Where they differ most for a buyer is in the shape of the public review record.

Who each option suits?

Consider Magic if: you want an on-demand or flexible-hours model rather than a fixed monthly retainer, you value a provider that engages publicly when things go wrong, and you are willing to put billing terms and refund policy in writing before starting.

Consider Wishup if: you want a dedicated assistant on a predictable monthly fee, you place weight on verifying a vendor through named, recent, structured third-party reviews, and the India timezone works for your operating hours.

In either case: get the billing and cancellation terms in writing, and ask specifically what happens if an assistant is unavailable or underperforming mid-cycle. Billing disputes are the dominant complaint theme in Magic's negative reviews, and they are the kind of term that is easy to skim past at signup.
